Description
Giovanni Battista (Giambattista) Piranesi (1720-1778) was an Italian artist that was known for his etchings of Rome and of creating fictitious and atmospheric “prisons.” Piranesi studied under Giuseppe Vasi, who introduced him to etching and engraving. Piranesi focused on the city and its monuments when doing art. Vasi was said to have told Piranesi that, “you are too much of a painter, my friend, to be an engraver.” After his work with Vasi he collaborated with students of the French Academy in Rome.
