Impact of internet on financial services industry: A case study of on-line investing
This paper examines the nature and scope of the dramatic growth of online investing since its advent in mid 1990s. The factors that have contributed to this expansion are explored along with the impact of this growth on the competitive landscape in the brokerage industry, consumers, and the regulatory issues that have ensued. The paper suggests ways of selecting the most appropriate online brokers for potential investors. The main conclusion of the study is that online investing is here to stay. While the future looks promising for mid-tire brokers, the discount and full-service brokers might face difficulties to adjust to the new competitive environment. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.
