Models and Maps from the Marshall Islands: A Case in Ethnomathematics
Stick charts are a significant part of the Marshallese navigation tradition. Here we focus on the mathematical ideas of modeling and mapping embodied in these charts as well as on the ideas about wave dynamics that they incorporate. These planar representations were used to teach prospective navigators the principles and specifics of the unique Marshallese system of "wave piloting.". © 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
