Abstract

The reduction of tetrakis(4-N-methylpyridyi)porphineiron(III) (FeIII TMpyP) by Ru(NH3)62+ has been studied as a function of pH. The rate constant for the reduction of the aquo complex is 1.6×105 M-1 s-1 while, for the monohydroxo complex, the rate constant is 5.1×106 M-1 s-1. These results lead to the determination of the self-exchange rate constant for the two forms as 1.2×106 M-1 s-1 for the former and < 109 M-1 s-1 for the latter. This very large difference in self-exchange rate is suggested to correlate with a smaller Franck-Condon barrier for low-spin than for high-spin iron porphyrins. © 1978, American Chemical Society.
